LinkedIn Headline Examples for Job Seekers (That Actually Get Recruiter Messages)

Most LinkedIn headlines fall into one of three buckets:

  1. Just a job title ("Software Engineer at Acme Corp")
  2. A signal with no context ("Actively seeking opportunities")
  3. A paragraph of buzzwords nobody searches for

None of these get you recruiter messages. Here's what does.

The formula

Your headline has 220 characters. Use them to answer three questions: what are you, what do you know, and what are you looking for.

The cleanest format:

[Target title] | [Skill] | [Skill] | [Value or signal]

Examples:

  • Senior Software Engineer | Go | Kubernetes | Seeking Staff roles
  • Product Manager | B2B SaaS | Growth | 0→1 products | Open to work
  • Data Scientist | SQL | Python | NLP | ex-Airbnb

That's it. The field is a search index. Treat it like one.

One exception: if you have a credential or exit that carries weight, lead with it. ex-Google | Senior SWE | TypeScript | React | Open to Staff roles will outperform a clean title-first headline because the beginning of your headline is what shows up truncated in search results and connection previews.

Why this matters for tech roles

LinkedIn's recruiter tool filters by keyword match. If "data engineer" isn't in your headline, you may not show up when a recruiter at Databricks or Snowflake filters for it. Same goes for specific skills: a backend search filtered on "Go" or "Rust" will surface your profile only if those terms are in your headline or experience.

The headline also appears in every InMail preview, every connection request, and every Google search for your name. It's doing work constantly, most of it invisible to you.

If you're actively searching, audit your headline against the 10 job descriptions you most want. Pull the required skills from each. If those keywords aren't in your headline, you're invisible to exactly the searches that should find you.

What to avoid

"Actively seeking employment" as your entire headline. No keywords means no search visibility. You also look like you're signaling desperation rather than expertise. Put the role and skills first, then add "open to work" at the end.

"Aspiring [job title]." Just use the title. "Aspiring data scientist" signals you don't think you're qualified for the thing you want. "Data Scientist | Python | SQL | Recent grad" signals the same career stage but actually surfaces in filtered searches.

A paragraph of text. Headlines are scanned, not read. Pipe-separated keywords are faster to process and map directly to how recruiter search filters work. Save the sentences for your About section.

Your current title only. "Software Engineer at Acme Corp" is the minimum viable headline. It misses the chance to load the most-searched field on your profile with skills recruiters are actually filtering on.

How to pick your keywords

Pull 10 job descriptions for your target role. Copy the required skills section from each. Any skill that appears in 7 or more of those 10 postings goes in your headline.

This takes 20 minutes and beats any generic advice about "keyword optimization." The terms that appear most in job descriptions are the exact strings recruiters search for. Match them.

One thing people miss: if you have direct experience with specific tools, name them exactly. Writing "Greenhouse" or "Lever" in a recruiting headline, or "dbt" and "Snowflake" in a data engineering headline, targets the specific company stacks that matter to the hiring teams you want.
